John McCain a
U.S. "national" but
not a U.S. "citizen."
John Sidney McCain III was
born August 29, 1936,
in the Panama Canal Zone,
an "unincorporated" U.S.
territory.
McCain did not become a U.S. citizen
until the following year.*
