The purpose of a birth certificate
is to "document an event."
The documentation identifies:
- What (the product of the event)
- Where (the location of the event)
- When (the date and time of the event)
- Who (contributed the DNA that made
the event possible.)
Typically, it also identifies a witness*
to the event.
