Political Factoid
Pertussis (Whooping Cough) is
a highly contagious bacterial
illness spread by coughs
and sneezes.
- California reduced the number of
cases of whooping cough by 2/3
(9000, in 2010, to 3000 in 2011).
- California whooping cough deaths
were reduced from 10, in 2010,
to zero in 2011.
A major contributor to this success was a new
California law that requires booster shots for
middle school and high school children.*
