Political Factoid

  • The federal gasoline tax, at
18.4 cents a gallon, has not
    increased in two decades.

  • Asphalt and other costs have
    risen dramatically.

  • At high prices for gasoline,
    the tax burden has fallen
to record lows as a percentage
of what we pay to drive.

  • Increased fuel efficiency has
    significantly eroded the
    collection of gas taxes per
vehicle mile to pay for the
    roads and bridges.

  • Tax revenues cover only about
half of what is paid to the states
to help repair roads and bridges.
