The U.S. DOT-111 tank car,
also known as the CTC-111A in Canada,
is a type of unpressurized
tank car commonly used in
North America to ship crude
oil from North Dakota's
Bakken region.
However, as has been
repeatedly shown, the
DOT-111 is inadequate*
to accomplish that task
reliably and safely.

The DOT-111 and the more highly
explosive and toxic Bakken crude
oil have been common denominators
in many of the railroad accidents
in recent years.
