Political Factoid

The U.S. Senate is controlled by minorities.
  • Two Senators from Wyoming (representing 270,000 people) can out vote a Senator from California (representing 37,000,000 people)

  • Only 30,000 people (the 2010 Delaware primary election, for example) select a Senatorial candidate to represent 900,000 people.

  • 41% of the Senators can block debate, let alone a vote, on issues of upmost importance to the citizens of the United States.

  • Only 40 Senators (representing 31,434,822 people) can out-vote 60 Senators (representing 274,972,071 people).

  • In a nation of over 300 million people, one Senator can put a  secret (anonymous) * hold on a bill to prevent key appointments, key appropriations, key ....

Working together, two Senators, can "tag-team" to hold up a measure indefinitely.
*  Only the annonymous part was deleted by the 2011 Senate.
