Political Factoid
"Give me your tired, your poor, your
huddled masses yearning to breathe
free."
-- Emma Lazarus' sonnet, New Colossus
Most Americans believe that
the words on the Statue of
Liberty apply only to selected
groups of people.
- Today we prefer wealthy, well-educated
people - (to buy expensive homes
and work for high-tech companies).
- We still prefer English speaking people,
preferably from Western Europe.
- We are willing to accept
people willing to work for low pay
at back-breaking jobs no existing
Americans want, but we are hesitant
to give them voting rights.
- We give preference to
white Christians.
